UNCTAD: 2020 Global Maritime Trade Atrophy 3.8%

On the 18th of local time, the United Nations Tournament released the sea operation report, focusing on the influence of the global shipping trade is affected and recovered. The report pointed out that 2020 global shipping volume decreased below expectations, laying the foundation for global supply chain transformation and new sea trading model. Although new crown epidemic disrupts sea transportation, its consequences are not as serious as the initial prediction. Last year, the global sea trade shrinks 3.8%, but there have been signs of recovery. It is expected that global maritime trade will increase by 4.3% in 2021. UNCTAD expects that the annual growth rate of shipping trade in 2022 to 2026 will slow down to 2.4%, and the average annual growth rate has grown by 2.9% over the past two decades.

The report pointed out that the new crown epidemic exposed and enlarged the challenges of the sea industry, such as labor shortage and infrastructure demand, and accelerated the trend of industry changes. The epidemic promotes the digitalization and automation of the shipping industry, and it is expected that China is still possible in the next leading manufacturing base in the future. Although global shipping has recovered from the epidemic, the supply chain faces unprecedented pressure, the freight is rapid, and consumers and importers will face the price of commodity prices. In addition, the seafarer is still facing the predicament. The epidemic has triggered the global crew replacement crisis, and hundreds of thousands of seafarers were influenced by the epidemic restrictions. They also have the same number of seafarers unable to hand over, and the UNCTAD appealed to all countries to vaccinate new crown vaccines for seafarers.
