According to the announcement issued by the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, the main ports affected by the import and export container delivery are the following ports:

Truck transportation to and from Yokohama (via Tokyo Port)
Truck transportation to and from Osaka (via Kobe Port)

Tokyo and Yokohama are among the top three ports in Japan, with a throughput of 4.57 million TEUs in Tokyo last year and 3 million TEUs in Yokohama.



Imported containers are currently in Tokyo port for more than ten days, and this situation is expected to continue in the coming months.

In this case, the shipping company advises the shippers to consider picking up the goods directly from the port. In addition, future shipments of goods can be switched to direct unloading/loading ports rather than being transported by the carrier outside the terminal.

Foreign media JOC.com said that there are currently alternatives for shippers, such as the use of inland container yards between Tokyo and Niigata Port. The shipping company Maersk also opened an inland container warehouse about 100 kilometers from Yokohama Port on November 1.


Labor aging dilemma

The aging of the workforce has increased the shortage of truck drivers.

At present, the “seeking rate” of Japanese truck drivers has been maintained at a high level of about 3 times, that is, each job-seeking truck driver corresponds to three recruiting positions. As the truck driver is hard to find, the large transportation company Fukuyama Express announced that it will cancel the Sunday pickup and distribution business from October 2018.



The Japan Railway Freight Association said that this shortage may increase and predicts that there will be a shortage of 280,000 truck drivers by 2028.
