The United States continues to expand shipping sanctions related to Iran

In recent years, the United States has continued to strengthen sanctions on Iran's energy exports and "shadow fleet".

The U.S. Treasury Department stated that this round of measures mainly targets the shipping, trading and intermediary networks that assist the transportation and sales of Iranian oil and petrochemical products.

Recently, the United States has repeatedly imposed additional sanctions on oil tankers, ship management companies, traders, and related financial networks.

Industry insiders pointed out that the current international shipping field continues to strengthen the review of ship compliance, AIS signal management, identification of actual beneficiaries of ships, and high-risk trade routes.

The main impact after being included in the SDN list

According to the relevant rules of OFAC in the United States, after being included in the SDN list, relevant companies and ships will usually face:

01

Impact on business

Assets in U.S. jurisdictions may be frozen;

U.S. individuals, businesses and financial institutions are in principle prohibited from conducting transactions with them;

If the relevant company is more than 50% owned by an SDN entity, it may also be automatically restricted.

02

Impact on ship operations

Some ports, insurance institutions and financial institutions may restrict related ship services;

Ship financing, insurance, bunkering and repair businesses may be affected;

Risks in international chartering, freight and settlement businesses have increased.

03

Industry observation

It is generally believed in the industry that the US sanctions against Iran's oil transportation network in recent years have gradually expanded from a single entity to include ships, traders, insurance and financial chains.

For shipping and foreign trade companies, they still need to continue to pay attention to:

The latest U.S. OFAC sanctions list update;

Actual operation of the ship and review of related parties;

High-risk routes and trade background compliance risks.
