DENMARK's Maersk Line has invested US$280 million to acquire six second-hand containerships from German Commerzbank, according to Intermodal Research and Valuations. The vessels were already being chartered by the Danish shipping giant.

The vessels are the 13,092 TEU Maersk Eureka and Maersk Edirne, built in 2012 by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). The two ships were previously part of Hanjin Shipping's fleet, reported World Maritime News, Rotterdam.

The ultra large containerships are worth $58 million each, according to the data from VesselsValue. The smaller vessels acquired by the carrier are the 4,800 TEU HS Shackleton and HS Baffin, both built in 2013 and worth $30 million each.

The remaining two ships are the 4,800 TEU Merkur Harbour and the 4,255 TEU Rio Connecticut, built in 2012. Their total value is estimated at $40 million.
