Global Ship Lease (GSL), a container ship owner listed on the New York Stock Exchange, recently announced that it will invest US$917 million (approximately RMB 6.2 billion) to order 10 new generation container ships.

Order for 10 6200TEU container ships landed

According to an announcement issued by GSL, the company has signed a construction agreement for 10 new container ships.Although the announcement did not disclose the specific shipyard, many industry media reported that the ships will be built by Jiangsu Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Sanfu Ship").It is understood that: ▶ Number of orders: 10 ▶ Ship specifications: 6200TEU container ship ▶ Total order value: US$917 million ▶ Single ship cost: approximately US$91.7 million ▶ Delivery time: The fourth quarter of 2028 to the first quarter of 2030 GSL stated that the new ship will adopt a wide-body design and have a high refrigerated container loading capacity to meet future changes in global container transportation market demand.
The new ships have been locked into long-term charters. It is worth noting that this batch of new ships has been supported by long-term charters during the construction stage.According to the information disclosed by GSL: ▶ The average lease period is about 7 years ▶ It is expected to generate EBITDA of about US$665 million ▶ George Youroukos, executive chairman of GSL, which mainly serves the global trunk route market, said that the new ships will become an important part of the company's future fleet renewal plan, improving operational efficiency while enhancing market competitiveness.

Chinese private shipping companies win another big order

For Sanfu Shipbuilding, this order is also of great significance.Public information shows that the largest container ship order undertaken by Sanfu Shipbuilding previously was a 4,500TEU-class ship, and this 6,200TEU container ship will refresh the shipyard’s historical construction record. In recent years, Sanfu Shipbuilding has continued to expand into the field of high value-added ship types.Between 2024 and 2025, the shipyard has built and delivered six 3716TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships for Germany's Hartmann Schiffahrts, which are currently in operation by Seaboard Marine.Industry insiders believe that the shift from 3,700TEU-class dual-fuel ships to 6,200TEU-class medium and large container ships reflects the continued improvement of Chinese private shipbuilding companies in terms of design and construction capabilities, project management capabilities, and international market recognition.

Chinese shipyard orders continue to grow. According to the latest data from Clarksons Research, as of now, Sanfu Ship’s order book has reached 106 ships with a deadweight of 4.08 million tons. The order structure includes: ▶ Container ships: 50 ships ▶ Multi-purpose ships: 36 ships ▶ Bulk carriers: 12 ships ▶ General cargo ships: 5 ships ▶ Offshore engineering ships: 3 ships The delivery period of the existing orders has been scheduled to 2030.At the same time, the overall order-taking performance of Chinese shipyards remains strong.Clarkson data shows that Chinese shipbuilding companies have continued to maintain a leading position in the global new ship order market in recent years, occupying important market shares in multiple segments such as container ships, car carriers, and dual-fuel ships.

market observation

For the first time, GSL has invested heavily in new shipbuilding and selected a Chinese private shipbuilding company to undertake the construction, which shows that international shipowners’ recognition of Chinese shipyards’ construction capabilities and delivery capabilities is further increasing. As the demand for global fleet renewal continues to be released, and environmental regulations promote the growth of demand for new generation of energy-saving ships, Chinese shipbuilding companies, especially private shipyards with professional construction capabilities, are expected to continue to receive more international orders in the next few years.
