According to data released by the Hong Kong Airport Authority on the evening of August 19, Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) received more than 6.7 million passengers in July this year, an increase of 1% year-on-year. The number of aircraft movements increased by 0.4% year-on-year to approximately 36,800. However, freight volume during the same period decreased by 7.3% to 401,000 tons. At the same time, the number of transit or transit passengers increased by 11% year-on-year, driving passenger traffic growth, with the largest increase in passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Japan.

Due to the 12% reduction in Hong Kong's imports and re-exports, the volume of cargo in July dropped significantly. Among the major trading regions, the volume of freight traffic to Southeast Asia and North America has fallen the most.

Statistics show that in the first seven months of this year, passenger traffic and aircraft movements at Hong Kong International Airport increased by 2.3% and 0.7% year-on-year to 44.6 million and over 249,800. In the first seven months, cargo traffic recorded 2.7 million tons, down 6.8% from the same period last year. In the past 12 months, the cumulative passenger traffic at the Hong Kong airport reached 75.7 million passengers, an increase of 2% year-on-year; the number of aircraft movements decreased by nearly 429,600, a slight increase of 0.9% year-on-year; the cargo volume decreased by 4.1% year-on-year to 5 million tons. .

Lin Tianfu, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, said earlier that due to the demonstrations on the 5th consecutive day from August 9th to 13th, the airport was shut down during the period from August 12 to 13, and 979 flights were cancelled during the period. On the 13th, 421 classes were cancelled, accounting for more than 30% of the total flights on the day, and the passenger handling volume was even more than 40%.

Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau Island is the busiest cargo airport in the world and the third busiest passenger airport. Last year, passenger traffic was about 75 million passengers, and cargo traffic was the highest in the world. About 200,000 passengers enter and leave the airport every day.

The Secretary for Transport and Housing of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Chen Fan, has previously stated that trade and logistics are the pillar industries of Hong Kong, close to the value of HK$370 million per year. The number of Hong Kong citizens who work at the airport is as high as 73,000, and the number of people who are not directly employed is as high as 56,000. More than 800,000 people in Hong Kong live on the Hong Kong International Airport industry chain.

Chen Fan pointed out that the Hong Kong International Airport will cause nearly 200,000 passengers lost in air passengers on the next day, and the loss of freight volume will exceed 13,000 tons.
