THE National Bureau of Statistics ordered the halt of a monthly economic survey in China's southern Guangdong Province on grounds that the provincial government had failed to file the correct paperwork on time.

According to a statement, analysed by Caixin, Guangdong's Department of Industry and Information Technology, which releases the region's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI), had not applied for a new approval to conduct the surveys.

The department will be allowed to resume surveying once it received a new approval "at the right time." No specific dates or deadlines were given.

The PMI is a monthly indicator of economic activity in one of China's most productive manufacturing hubs. The reading, benchmarked at 50, fell into contractionary territory in August for the first time in 30 months, which economists have attributed to US trade tensions.

The Guangdong Department of Industry and Information Technology has released the survey every month for the last seven years.
