  The second officer of the ship, Ivan Durasevic, and another crew member named Fonofavae Tiasaga were arrested.


    Prior to coming to Philadelphia, Mediterranean shipping companies had docked in the Bahamas, Panama, Peru and Colombia. The ship is heading to the Netherlands. According to the complaint, Durasevic told the authorities that cocaine was loaded onto the ship after leaving Peru. Tiasaga told the authorities that six ships approached MSC Gayane at night, while Durasevic operated the crane to carry cocaine bags on board.


    According to the complaint, the ship was later approached by another eight ships loaded with more cocaine. Tiasaga told the authorities that his job was to help transfer the drug to the deck.


    “This is one of the largest drug seizures in US history. The number of cocaine can cause millions of deaths,” US Inspector McSwain said in a tweet.

  The Mediterranean shipping company issued a statement on the official website saying they are "taking this matter very seriously."


    “The Mediterranean shipping company was aware of reports of the Philadelphia Harbor incident in which US authorities seized illegal goods. MSC attached great importance to this matter and thanked the authorities for identifying any suspected misuse of its services,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, shipping and logistics companies are affected by trafficking issues from time to time. MSC has long worked with US federal law enforcement agencies to help fight illegal drug trafficking and works closely with the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).”
