A few days ago, the White House announced that U.S. President Trump had signed a document on December 31, 2025, to postpone the implementation of a new round of tariff rate adjustments for upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets and other products that were originally planned to take effect on January 1, 2026.
Effective date of new tariffs postponed to January 1, 2027
It is reported that in September last year, Trump had ordered an additional 25% tariff on the above-mentioned imported furniture, which officially came into effect in October. The new tariffs originally planned to be raised again from the beginning of this year are to increase the tariffs on upholstered furniture to 30% and kitchen cabinets to 50%.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that furniture prices have already been on the rise in August 2025, with living room and dining room furniture experiencing the most obvious increases, increasing by 9.5% in the past 12 months. Some analysts believe that this is mainly due to the increase in tariffs imposed on many types of goods after Trump took office.

The White House did not directly explain the specific reason for the postponement of the increase. But the White House said in a statement: "The United States remains engaged in productive negotiations with its trading partners to address trade reciprocity issues and national security concerns related to wood product imports."

Also citing "national security risks", on January 2, Trump signed an executive order ordering the Chinese company HieFo to cancel its US$2.92 million (approximately RMB 20 million) acquisition of the US chip company EMCORE.
In the executive order, it alleged that there is credible evidence that the transaction may threaten U.S. national security.
The U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement: "The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) determined that the transaction involved potential risks in acquiring Emcore's intellectual property, proprietary technology and expertise and constituted a national security threat."
Therefore, HieFo must divest all acquired assets of Emcore within 180 days and immediately restrict access to technical information.
It is reported that Emcore focuses on the fields of optical fiber communications and solar photovoltaic technology, and mainly produces navigation equipment for commercial, industrial and defense fields. However, it has continued to suffer losses in recent years.
Some media believe that the revocation of this order reflects the United States’ anxiety about technological competition between China and the United States.

In addition, the Trump administration also forcibly suspended the leases of multiple offshore wind power projects under construction on the East Coast of the United States on January 2 due to "national security concerns," saying that "wind turbines are ugly, costly, and inefficient, and the rotation of the windmill blades will affect radar."
This move directly affects the employment of thousands of workers and more than 30 billion US dollars (approximately 217.5 billion yuan) in private investment.
At present, many developers, including Statoil's Imperial Offshore Wind Co., Ltd., Revolution Wind Power Company, and Dominion Energy of the United States, have challenged the project suspension order and filed lawsuits, accusing it of being "arbitrary, arbitrary and unconstitutional."
Developers stated that the administrative order has no legal effect and will not only endanger the construction progress of the project, but also cause serious losses to the overall progress.
In the case of Dominion, a formal hearing will be held on January 16, when the legality of the Trump administration's actions will be reviewed.
If the Trump administration wins the case, it may start a new round of administrative suppression of renewable energy.
